About SexGen North
We have three interlinked aims:
- To protect and celebrate gender, women’s, queer, trans and feminist studies (and similar) in higher education institutions in Northern England;
- To foster cross-institutional collaboration and support scholars, especially ECRs and PGRs, in these disciplines;
- To establish Northern England as a hub for gender, women’s, queer, trans and feminist studies internationally.
Our objectives include:
- Supporting and creating research centres/clusters/groups in member institutions;
- Supporting and creating teaching programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate) in member institutions;
- Generating opportunities for knowledge-sharing and networking amongst members and for members, both in-person and online;
- Generating opportunities for collaborative research between members and for members;
- Supporting collaborative teaching amongst members and member institutions;
- Publicising and celebrating new scholarship by members and other scholars in Northern England and more widely;
- Building capacity for research impact and working with community groups dedicated to gender/queer/trans equality.
How we work
- We have a steering committee with representatives from participating institutions plus PGR representation, which meets regularly to support our activities.
- Representatives of member institutions can volunteer to host events and other activities under the SexGen North banner, which can be open to members or open to all.
- Our way of working is interdisciplinary, intersectional, collaborative and trans-national.
- We are staunchly trans- and sex worker-inclusive.
- We are committed to opposing and tackling racism, classism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, gender-based violence, colonial legacies and cultural discrimination.
- We are committed to resisting the attacks on our disciplines from anti-gender movements and right-wing populism.
